Hemp has been a long time coming back to Kentucky – but it is back. Since the second Kentucky Industrial Hemp Commission was formed by former Agricultural Commissioner James Comer in 2013, progress has come fast. In 2014 there were 12 different research crops that grew from seed to harvest, roughly 120 acres. This year Kentucky is planning to plant 1742 acres. Now that is progress!
Symbolically, there has been no greater development than Locust Grove in Louisville growing hemp in 2015. Locust Grove is one of the most historically rich places in all of Kentucky. For hemp to be growing there in 2015 is nothing short of tremendous. If you’re in the Louisville area, be sure to go to the Locust Grove Hemp Festival on August 9.
